Jingxiu village in the Lincang region is home to what is known as the 3,200-year-old tea ancestor — a wild tree of the Camellia Taliensis species, one of the oldest living tea trees in the world. This region is unlike any other pu'er area — both banks of the Lancang River are lined with these yesheng wild trees and qiannian thousand-year-old giants, growing freely as they always have. The tea produced here is unique in its profile: no astringency, no bitterness. Just depth and clarity.
I have been travelling to this place several times since 2016, when we first stood before the tea ancestor on our expedition and felt the weight of its age. In 2017 we ventured a little further and discovered the Walnut Valley — a hidden place where Mr. Li Chunfu tends several gardens of old Camellia sinensis var. assamica trees with quiet dedication.
His tea is clean and powerful, with a beautiful aroma and a lasting aftertaste. This particular maocha is a blend of leaves from his Base No. 3 — a personal recipe born from years of patient cultivation and deep knowledge of his trees.
