Jin Mudan – Golden Peony
Wuyi Region, Fujian Province
Jin Mudan, meaning "Golden Peony", is a fragrant cultivar developed at the Tea Research Institute of Fujian Province Academy of Agriculture through hybrid breeding of two celebrated parents — Tie Guanyin (Iron Goddess of Mercy) and Huang Yan. Nationally recognized as an official tea plant variety in 2010, it belongs to the shrub type with medium-sized leaves and distinctive purple-green buds.
This particular tea was produced in the mountains of the Wuyi region, near the national park. Every yellow leaf has been meticulously removed during processing — a time-consuming step that speaks directly to the quality in the cup.
The tea undergoes three rounds of charcoal roasting, during which the Maillard reaction transforms the natural sugars in the leaves into rich caramelized compounds. The result is a sweetness that reveals itself from the very first infusion. As a highly aromatic cultivar, Jin Mudan announces itself the moment the leaves meet a preheated teapot — a wave of spring blossoms, tree flowers and warm caramel rising immediately from the vessel.
In the cup, the body is full and confident, with a deep, satisfying finish. Using 5 g per 100 ml, you can expect around seven generous infusions before the tea begins to fade gracefully.
