When Mountains Speak Through Tea

"Tea is a living wisdom — the memory of the earth that I am learning to interpret." — Michal Butor, Sinologist and founder of Teabar.

A Sinologist on the Trail of Rare Flavors

Decades of studying the Chinese language and culture, combined with leading expeditions into the deep tea mountains of southern China — places deep in the forest, where ancient trees, rich soil, and clean air have shaped tea for centuries — form the cornerstone of this shop. For me, this is more than a business — it is a way of life. As a Chinese language interpreter, I don't simply source leaves; I cultivate direct relationships with small-scale farmers, hidden factories, and famous tea producers who grow tea in pristine, ecological surroundings, pouring their hearts into every harvest.

The Health Benefits of Tea

When you first begin drinking high-quality loose-leaf tea, the most immediate thing you may notice is its powerful effect on your body. It invigorates your mind, sharpens your focus, and carries you effortlessly through your work. Over time, you start to discover the remarkable depth of its health benefits.

Tea is a natural source of antioxidants, which help protect the body against inflammation and cell damage. It can lift you out of fatigue almost instantly, offering a calm, sustained energy — without the jittery spike of coffee. It supports healthy digestion, boosts the immune system, and may help regulate blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Known for its gentle detoxifying properties, tea also promotes clearer skin and better sleep when chosen wisely. For centuries, it has been used to ease headaches, soothe the nervous system, and even help reduce fever.

But beyond the physical, high-quality tea offers something rarer — a moment of stillness. A cup that asks you to slow down, breathe, and simply be present.

When the Mountains Begin to Speak

Once you have discovered the common health benefits of tea, you may find yourself drawn deeper — into the fascinating world of the six tea types, cultivars, bushes and old-growth trees, and the distinct character shaped by different mountains, soils, and altitudes. With each step closer to understanding the nuances of a single tea, you move further into the vast and rich knowledge that tea culture holds.

You may begin to sense the mineral resonance of the rocks of Wuyi Shan — what the Chinese call 岩韵 (yán yùn), literally "the rhyme of the rock." Or you may feel the ancient, unhurried energy of the old tea trees rooted in the Lancang (Mekong) river basin — the cradle of tea, where Yunnan, Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam meet, and where ancient trees grow free of any border.

Every tea carries within it a special energy, known as 茶气 (Chá Qī). Among enthusiasts, it is one of the most celebrated and debated qualities of fine tea. Some describe it as a vivid surge of energy that rises after drinking; others experience it as something quieter and more profound — a gentle shift into a meditative state of mind, a stillness that settles over you like mist over a mountain. Perhaps that is the truest expression of Chá Qī: not a kick, but an awakening.

That is what I mean when I say the mountains speak through tea. Every cup carries an altitude, a forest, a pair of hands, and a story. You just have to learn to listen.

Touching the ground

Once I burned my hands in the glowing pan while pan-firing tea leaves, I truly understood how hard it is to produce a single batch of good dry tea. The leaf shrinks to a quarter of its original weight — four kilograms of fresh leaf yields just one of dry tea. But the sheer joy when the leaves begin to crackle on the pan and the vapour of tea saturates the air around you — that makes it all worth it.

The origin of tea trees

On my journeys throughout China and particularly the Yunnan province (each spring from 2012 to 2019, except 2014), I have come across places with above hundred years old tea trees in the Xishuangbanna region, as well as a thousand and above years old tea trees in Baoshan and Lincang region. Now, I would like to share my experiences and the knowledge gained during my travels and from Chinese books.

What is a tea plant and tea culture?

This page is dedicated to the art of tea from the Chinese tea tree (Camellia sinensis) and the tea culture, which is widespread in Asia in every aspect of society, and is gradually penetrating the entire world. Drinking tea is similar to the traditional European culture of drinking herbal decoctions, which is, however, associated with traditional medicine, and therefore does not create conditions for social gatherings, as when drinking tea from the Chinese tea tree in Asia.
